Eid mubarak to you lady, I’m sure you got my sms….just a comment on the Labarang Mubarak story…As your resident Cape Town translator who is actually not malay but has grown up with lots of malay friends and very few indian friends for that matter, I’m feel it is my duty to inform you that it’s actually “Slamat for Labarang!”. Now when Eid-ul-adha rolls around a lot of Capetonians will start wishing you well for “Labarang Hajie”. You see Labarang is a Malaysian influenced word. In fact the Afrikaans language is peppered with Malay influenced words that have been accepted into the Afrikaans Vocabulary. For instance…Piesang (Banana), Blatjang (Chutney), and my personal favourite…..Kaparang (Slipper). I also know this hilarious poem told to me by a rather inebriated member of the Young Woodstock Starlites minstrel troop, also known as “Die Klopse” it starts like this….”Oemie slat vir Boeya met ‘n kaparang op labarang”….the rest I don’t remember….growing up in Cape Town had it’s fun days!
