Job Hunting in South Africa??

For those who KNOW what I do… and others who don’t….

I’m currently freelancing (entails: content development, writing, proofing, editing, copyediting, reading manuscripts, designing adverts, media campaigns, project plans etc)

It’s been a year and a half since I last worked office hours. It so happens I feel boxed in, where I NEED to get back into a normal life where work begins and ends on a timeframe.

Job hunting NOW, during a period when the entire world feels the recession taking chunks of their wallet with it, isn’t the best option. Khalil suggested that I pursue my entrepreneurial abilities – but startups, like most projects need to work on a timeframe of getting things done, and one needs to consider sustainability of revenue as well locating a niche market.

Information, for those reading my blog who are looking for new jobs, a change of scenery or some padding on the paycheck ;)

Careerjunction:

careerjunction offers an easy way to render your CV searchable, its often that YOU need to go looking for a job, instead of the recruiter finding YOU.

Pnet – similar to Careerjunction

Career24 – Job listing

Careerjet:

What it is? A Job search engine or aggregator that saves you the time of searching multiple sites for jobs, and its just one reference point. The sucky thing about this search engine is that collates old and expired jobs in your search and presents it as new ones. All in all, not too bad as it crawls multiple sites.

Gumtree –  check out the  jobs section – Change city to choose your location:

While most classified sites require recruiters to pay a fee to list their jobs, gumtree is free. Being a free service it comes with a list of pro’s and cons. It allows you to search and list vacancies with ease. Not all the adverts are reliable, but it is a platform that is constantly updated with new positions. You’ll find that more established company’s opt for paid for listings, as it shows credibility and filters out ‘chancers’.

Points of concern: Models and women – if you are applying for a job via gumtree, please make sure the company is legit.

Bizcommunity Jobs:

Focusses more on the media platform. .

The job search clinic:

This site was very informative – answering questions like why recruiters don’t get back to you, how do you market yourself, ideas for CV’s and coverletters. It also present a wealth of information for you. Sign up for the Free Stuff it will give you a better grasp of how things function.

Another big factor impressing on the recruitment industry is temping. In the current socio-economic climate one finds that temporary employment is on the rise – with the likes of 2-3-4 month contracts and quarterly filler positions. While we’re all hoping to find that ‘dream’ job, the reality is… the starting point is never part of the dream, just another stepping stone to get there.

  1. Perfect timing on this post.
However, my situation is converse to this, as I’m leaving full-time employ next week for the wild and crazy waters of freelanceship.
Here’s to us successfully swopping our boxes.

  2. if i were giving out advice, i’d suggest a time-management progress to focus on the skills your need to land the clients you want to work with, as to giving up the independence of freelancing…

    why?

you may just be freelancing in the wrong field

because the opportunities and knowledge you achieve from consultancy, you seldom find working in full-time employment.

    focus
write up a plan of action to achieve your goals
    build up skill requirements
market yourself to a list of favorable clients

see why i don’t give out advice :)

if you do decide to go full-time employment – my best wishes to your success and happiness – just don’t sell yourself short – you seem to be a very intelligent dynamic and methodical person – don’t grab a mediocre profession just because the economy forecast is low – you are the master of your destination – your education and skills are the fuels of your profession… think of the possibilities and the independent projects to manage… the universe is the limit – if there is a limit – do we even know?

keep well and enjoy your professional pursuit
